Dental Terminology Flashcards
Alveolar
Bone
Amalgam
An alloy of mercury with one or more metals
Amelo
Enamel
Apex
The tip of a root
Approximal (proximal)
Surfaces of the teeth that adjoin each other in the same dental arch (in-between)
Aspiration
Removal of gases, liquids and solids from the body by vacuum suction
Bite
The action of bringing maxillary and mandibular teeth into contact
Bridge
An application attached to natural teeth or implants replacing missing teeth.
Buccal
Surface if the tooth adjacent to cheek
Calculus
A mineralised salivary deposit in an organic matrix found on surfaces of the teeth
Canine
3rd tooth in the permanent dentition
Situated between the incisors and premolars
Caries
An infectious disease resulting in progressive destruction of tooth tissue.
Cementum
A pale yellow calcified tissue providing a protective covering for the root surface to which the fibres of periodontal membrane are secured
Crown
The part of the tooth dentine which is covered by enamel (anatomical crown)
The part of the crown that is clearly visible (clinical crown)
Cusp
A pointed or rounded projection on the crown of the tooth
Dentine
The mineralised organic tissue that makes up the bulk of the tooth surrounding the pulp.
Harder than bone but not as hard as enamel or cementum.
Dentition
The arrangement of teeth in the mouth
Distal
Furthest away from the midline of the dental arch
Fluoride
A salt of hydrofluoric acid, usually sodium calcium or stannous.
Furcation
The site of the division of the roots in a multi-rooted tooth
Gingiva
Connective tissue and overlying keratinized mucosa that immediately surrounds the teeth.
Gingivitis
Reversible inflammation of the gingival tissues characterized by redness, swelling, false pockets and a glazed appearance.
Erythema
Redness
Halitosis
Bad breath
Hyper
Excessive, exaggerated, abnormality increased eg hyperplasia
Hypo
Deficiency, lack of small in size
Incisal
Relating to the cutting edge of an anterior tooth
Incisor
The teeth situated at the front of the dentition
Intra-oral
In the mouth
Labial
Surface nearest to lips
Lingual
The surface of the tooth adjacent to the tongue
Macro
Large size or enlargement
Mandible
The lower jaw
Mastication
The process of chewing food
Maxilla
One of two bones which are mirror images of each other. (Upper jaw) containing the upper teeth.
Mesial
Tooth near the midline
Midline
Middle of the body
Molar
Teeth situated at the back of the mouth behind the premolars. Adults have 3.
Morphology
The study of the form or shape of an organism
Mucosa
A membrane lining the oral cavity
Occlusal
Chewing surface of the tooth
Palatal
The surface of the tooth adjacent to the roof of the mouth (palate)
Palate
The bike and soft tissue that forms the roof of the mouth. This separates the mouth and the nasal cavity
Papilla
Taste buds.
V shape in-between teeth
Circumvallate papilla
Taste bud
Interproximal papilla
V shape gingiva in between teeth
Periapical
Surrounding the apical (apex) area of the tooth.
Periodontal
Relating to the periodontium.
Periodontitis
Inflammation of the supporting tissues of the teeth, resulting in permanent tissue destruction
Pit
A small depression if the enamel surface of a tooth
Plaque
A biofilm consisting of an organised bacterial community, salivary mucins and proteins adhering to tooth surfaces, restorations and prosthetic appliances.
An abnormal space developing between the gingiva and the root of the tooth
Premolar
Situated between the canine and the first permanent molars. 2 per quadrant
Probe
A thin flexible instrument designed to be inserted into a cavity or wound for the purposes of exploration
Pulp
A highly vascular connective tissue in the centre of the tooth
Root
The part of the tooth covered by cementum and not enamel
Skull
The entire body framework of the head and face.
Subgingival
Describing a location at a level apical to the gingival margin
Suppuration
The formation of pus. Done in response to established bacterial infection
Supra gingival
Situated above or coronal to the gingival margin
Temporal mandibular joint (tmj)
A double synovial joint that connects with the condyle of the mandible with the squamous part of the temporal bone
Tissue
An aggregation of similar cells performing a specialised function
Tongue
A muscular organ
Tooth
One of the hardest mineralised structures embedded into the maxillary and mandibular alveolar precesses if the mouth
