Dental Pulp and its responses Flashcards
What is the Pulp functions?
- Dentine formation
- Defence and repair
- Sensory
Label the pulp diagram.
What cells does dental pulp contain?
Specialised cells - odontoblasts
Fibroblasts
Stem cells
Defence cells
Label this cross section of pulp.
What do Odontoblasts do and what are they controlled by?
Postmitotic cell
Mild irritation – produce reactionary tertiary dentine
Activity controlled by growth factors e.g. TGF Beta released from dentine when carious
What do Afferent nerves - stimuli to dentine result in?
- Pain
- Increased blood flow
- axon reflex -> Vasodilation + capillary permeability sensitivity
What does Dentinal Fluid do?
Contains
- Proteins, glycoprotein, polysaccarides
Fluid flows outwards in opened tubules
Fluid flow changes with pulpal pressure:
- Inflammation
- Vasoconstrictors
What is Plexus of Raschkow ?
Plexus of Raschkow – classically in the “Cell Free Zone”
What happens to pulp as age increases?
The following all decrease:
cells
vascular
nerves - sensitivity
