What do Odontoblasts do and what are they controlled by?

A

Postmitotic cell

Mild irritation – produce reactionary tertiary dentine

Activity controlled by growth factors e.g. TGF Beta released from dentine when carious

  • Pain
  • Increased blood flow
  • axon reflex -> Vasodilation + ­ capillary permeability ­ sensitivity

A

Contains

  • Proteins, glycoprotein, polysaccarides

Fluid flows outwards in opened tubules

Fluid flow changes with pulpal pressure:

  • Inflammation
  • Vasoconstrictors
