Dental Morph W1-4 Summary Flashcards
What is the difference between the interproximal space and interdental papilla?
Interproximal Space: Is the triangular space located between the teeth. Base is the crest of the alveolar bone and apex is the contact area.
Interdental papilla: gingival tissue occupying the interproximal space.
What is the difference between an oblique ridge and a marginal ridge?
Oblique ridge: a ridge which crosses occlusal surface of maxillary molar in oblique manner (MP cusp with triangular ridge of DB cusp).
Marginal ridge: elevation of enamel forming mesial/distal margin of occlusal surface.
What is the difference between emergence and eruption?
Emergence: tooth showing through gingiva
Eruption: continuous movement from dental bud to occlusal contact
When is mixed dentition?
6-12
What influences the eruption sequence?
Ethnicity, gender and individual variations.
Tend to erupt later than earlier, more advanced in girl permanent teeth.
What teeth have blade like crowns and what are they adapted too?
Incisors.
Cutting and shearing food
Describe Class I incisal relationship
The mandibular incisal edge occludes against maxillary cingulum
Which teeth have the longest root in dentition and are self-cleansing?
Canine. Crown is convex in all directions
Describe the canines relationship in Class I Occlusion
Mesial slope of upper canine coincides with distal slope of lower canine
What is the least common fissure system in 2nd MD premolar?
U
What happens in root resorption?
The structure of the tooth root is taken back into the body. Osteoclasts do this.
What is the process of shedding the primary dentition called?
Exfoliation. This begins at the apical end of the root, called resorption.
What fissure pattern is most common in MN 2nd premolars?
Y most common, the H, then U
Y= 3 cusps, 2 pits
H = 2 cusps, 2 pits
What tooth is the 1st permanent tooth to erupt?
1st molars
Which teeth has an oblique ridge?
Maxillary 1st molar and less prominent on Max 2nd molar
Which tooth has a transverse ridge?
Mandibular 1st premolar
Which premolar tooth has a buccal ridge?
MX 1st premolar
Which teeth are accessional and what does this mean?
Permanent molars
Nothing preceded before them
Why do we have pits?
Lobes haven’t coalesced very well,
plaque catching area and carious predisposing spot.
Which teeth are the strongest and perform chewing?
Permanent molars
What is dens evaginatus?
Composed of normal enamel and dentine, may or may not contain pulp tissue, pulp tissue can extend to centre of the tubercle - once fractured pulp is exposed.
What are the different types of 3rd molars?
Impacted
Ectopic
Supernumerary
What teeth are the cornerstone of the arch robustness?
Canine- most stable tooth in the mouth- also self cleansing.
How many lobes do incisors develop from?
4
3 facial
1 lingual
What is the cross section of incisors at CEJ?
Central = triangular
Lateral = ovid
What are primate spaces and diastema?
Diastema: space between central incisors
Primate: between lateral and canines on MX, and canines and premolars on MD.
Where is the talon?
MX 1st molar
