Dental materials: Stainless steel + NiTi Flashcards
Why are endodontic files single use?
- swarf may harbour CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease)
- minimises risk of fracture through work hardening
What is stainless steel an alloy of?
iron + carbon (steel)
What is added to stainless steel at manufacture?
chromium
may also add Ni to help corrosion + strength
What is the effect of adding chromium to stainless steel?
forms CrO2-> prevents rusting by passivating effect
What types of heat treatment can be applied to stainless steel?
-Tempering
-Heating
-Quenching
What is the temp range for tempering?
200-400
What are the drawbacks of SS files?
lack of resilience
no shape memory
What are the benefits of NiTi over SS?
softer
not heat treatable
lower modulus of elasticity
greater strenght
tougher
greater resilience
shape memory
superelasticity
What gives NitTi its properties?
changes in crystal structure
Describe austenitic properties
Hexagonal lattice
less brittle
higher modulus of elasticity
Describe martensitic properties
Body centred cubic lattice
more brittle
lower modulus of elasticity
Is SS or NiTi more efficient at cutting + why?
SS
Can NiTi files be twisted?
NO
superelasticity- so cannot be twisted unlike SS
What is the effect of ionic implant of boron?
Increased surface hardness
What is the benefit of thermal nitridation
increased wear resistance
