What is HPV linked to and tx?
Linked younger pt - don’t smoke/ consume heavy alcohol
Linked orogential and oroanal sex and increased no partners
Tx: radio and chemotherapy
What is PET scan?
Injection of dye to show metabolic activity
What team members are involved in oncology?
Oncologist, radiologist, surgeon, dentist, ward staff, admin, speech and language therapist
Other: clinical psychologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapy
Aim dental assessment pre-tx?
Pre-prosthetic planning/ tx
Planning XLA teeth doubtful prognosis
Restoration teeth
Preventative advice and tx
Tx side effects?
- Mucositis - inflammation and ulceration mucosal lining
- Infection - chemo causes neutropenia - increase susceptibility
- Xerostomia
Long term side effects tx?
- Dental caries - linked xerostomia
- Trismus - surgical scarring or radiotherapy induced fibrosis of M.O.M
- Osteoradionecrosis
Prevent dental side effects tx?
- Maintain good oral hygiene
- Dietary advice - re caries prevention
- Topical fluoride application
- Tooth Mousse - calcium and phosphate (not available NHS)
- Saliva replacement
Rehab for pts?
Consider reconstruction - prosthetic options/ implants
What is an obturator?
Removable prosthesis - alternative bone and implant reconsturction
