Dental Caries Classification Flashcards
Pit and fissure caries
pits and fissures on the occlusal surfaces of posterior teeth, buccal surfaces of posterior teeth, buccal and lingual surfaces of molars, lingual surfaces of maxillary anterior teeth
smooth surface caries
on the surfaces that are pit and fissure free
root surface caries
more in the elderly, follows an advanced gingival recession
active caries
rampant or chronic
chronic caries
slow, long standing. Dark in color and there is a good chance of remineralization in early stages to reverse the process
rampant caries
rapidly invading, softer lesions. Often due to a cause such as meth mouth, radiation or nursing bottles
arrested caries
- not showing any further progression
- smooth and polished-like surface
recurent/ secondary caries
caries under a preexisting faulty restoration
Class I Caries
Pits and fissures of the occlusal surfaces of premolars and molars; buccal or lingual pits/fissures of the molars; lingual pit near the cingulum of the maxillary incisors
Class II Caries
Involving the proximal surfaces (medial and distal) of premolars and molars
Class III Caries
Proximal surfaces of incisors and canines
Class IV Caries
proximal surfaces of incisors and canines, but will involve the incised edge
Class V Caries
gingival third of the facial or lingual surface of any tooth
Class VI caries
involve the incised edges of anterior teeth and the cusp tip of posterior teeth
fundamental concepts for all tooth preparations
- removal of dental caries
- removal of weak tooth structure to provide well-supported sound hard tissue
- pulp protection
