Dental Anatomy Flash Cards
Maxillary 1st Molar Facial ViewCoronal Taper
– The Mx 1st molars have the opposite crown taper of all other molars. • They are larger at the lingual M-D dimension than the facial M-D dimension.– Proximal surfaces can be viewed from the facial aspect on Mx 1st molars.– All maxillary molars have a much greater coronal taper to the cervical than the mandibular molars.
Maxillary 1st Molar Facial ViewCusps
– Largest cusp is the ML cusp (visible from the facial).– Smallest cusp is DL cusp which is also visible.– MB and DB cusps are the about the same size.– Facial surface is narrower M-D than the lingual surface.
Maxillary 1st Molar Palatal ViewCusps
– ML cusp is the largest cusp present. • Cusp of Carabelli may be present on the surface of the ML cusp – DL cusp is sizeable, but not as large as the ML.
Maxillary 1st Molar Palatal ViewCrown dimensions
– Due to the larger ML cusp, the majority of the bulk of the tooth from this view is located in the mesial of the crown.– MB cusp and most of the DB cusp will not be visible from the lingual due to the large ML cusp on these molars.NOTE: No proximal surfaces are viewable fromthe lingual.
Maxillary 1st Molar Palatal ViewGrooves
– The ML and DL cusp are separated by a L groove which may terminate in a lingual pit at its apex.
Maxillary 1st Molar Proximal ViewCrown Dimensions
– Short occluso-gingivally and broad buccolingually.
Maxillary 1st Molar Proximal ViewDistal View
– All of the cusps of the tooth are visible and also some of the buccal and lingual surfaces.– Due to slight distal tilt to the occlusal table.
Maxillary 1st Molar Proximal ViewMesial View
Only the MB and ML cusps are visible and the higher MB marginal ridge prevents the viewing of the occlusal table.
Maxillary 1st Molar Proximal ViewMarginal Ridge Grooves
– Can be present and radiate out from themarginal ridge fossae.– These are more common on the mesialmarginal ridge.
Maxillary 1st Molar Proximal ViewTubercles
On unworn teeth can be associated withtubercles which are marginal ridgeprominences present between themarginal ridge grooves.
Maxillary 2nd Molar Facial View Coronal Shape
– Very similar to the Mx 1st molars.– Short occluso-gingival dimension.– Broad M-D.– Slight slant of the occlusal table to the distal.
Maxillary 2nd Molar Facial ViewCusps
– MB cusp is noticeably larger than the DB cusp.– ML cusp is still the largest and can be seen from the facial.– DL cusp is not usually visualized from the facial view.• DL cusp may not be present.• If it is present is much smallerthan all of the other cusps.
Maxillary 2nd Molar Palatal ViewNumbers of Cusps
– About 1/3+ have a 3 cups configuration.– About 2/3 have a 4 cusp configuration.– This differs from Mx 1st molars which have a crown containing 4-5 cusps.
Maxillary 2nd Molar Palatal ViewDL Cusp
– May not be present (3 cusp version).– If present (4 cusp version) the DL cusp is verysmall in comparison to the other cusps of themolar crown
Maxillary 2nd Molar Palatal ViewML Cusp
–Similar to the Mx 1st molar, the ML cusp withMx 2nd molars is the largest cusp of the crown.– Due to the size difference of the cusps, moreof the bulk of the tooth from the palatal viewis located in the mesial portion of the crown.
