Q

Maxillary 1st Molar Facial ViewCoronal Taper

A

– The Mx 1st molars have the opposite crown taper of all other molars. • They are larger at the lingual M-D dimension than the facial M-D dimension.– Proximal surfaces can be viewed from the facial aspect on Mx 1st molars.– All maxillary molars have a much greater coronal taper to the cervical than the mandibular molars.

Q

Maxillary 1st Molar Facial ViewCusps

A

– Largest cusp is the ML cusp (visible from the facial).– Smallest cusp is DL cusp which is also visible.– MB and DB cusps are the about the same size.– Facial surface is narrower M-D than the lingual surface.

Q

Maxillary 1st Molar Palatal ViewCusps

A

– ML cusp is the largest cusp present. • Cusp of Carabelli may be present on the surface of the ML cusp – DL cusp is sizeable, but not as large as the ML.

Q

Maxillary 1st Molar Palatal ViewCrown dimensions

A

– Due to the larger ML cusp, the majority of the bulk of the tooth from this view is located in the mesial of the crown.– MB cusp and most of the DB cusp will not be visible from the lingual due to the large ML cusp on these molars.NOTE: No proximal surfaces are viewable fromthe lingual.

Q

Maxillary 1st Molar Proximal ViewDistal View

A

– All of the cusps of the tooth are visible and also some of the buccal and lingual surfaces.– Due to slight distal tilt to the occlusal table.

Q

Maxillary 1st Molar Proximal ViewMesial View

A

Only the MB and ML cusps are visible and the higher MB marginal ridge prevents the viewing of the occlusal table.

Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar Facial View Coronal Shape

A

– Very similar to the Mx 1st molars.– Short occluso-gingival dimension.– Broad M-D.– Slight slant of the occlusal table to the distal.

Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar Facial ViewCusps

A

– MB cusp is noticeably larger than the DB cusp.– ML cusp is still the largest and can be seen from the facial.– DL cusp is not usually visualized from the facial view.• DL cusp may not be present.• If it is present is much smallerthan all of the other cusps.

Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar Palatal ViewNumbers of Cusps

A

– About 1/3+ have a 3 cups configuration.– About 2/3 have a 4 cusp configuration.– This differs from Mx 1st molars which have a crown containing 4-5 cusps.

Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar Palatal ViewML Cusp

A

–Similar to the Mx 1st molar, the ML cusp withMx 2nd molars is the largest cusp of the crown.– Due to the size difference of the cusps, moreof the bulk of the tooth from the palatal viewis located in the mesial portion of the crown.

–Considerable occluso-gingival taper as there isin Mx 1st molars.

17
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar Palatal ViewLingual Groove

A

– May or may not be present depending on thepresence of the DL cusp.

18
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar Proximal ViewDimensions

A

Short occluso-gingivally and broaderfacio-lingually

Maxillary 2nd Molar Proximal ViewMesial View

NAME?

21
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar Proximal ViewDistal View

A

–Due to the slight distal occlusal tabletilt, the occlusal surface is visible fromthe distal.– The DL cusp may or may not be present.– Distal marginal ridge is located cervicalto the mesial marginal ridge as Mx 1stmolar

22
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar Proximal ViewMarginal ridge grooves

A

– May also be present on Mx 2nd molars, but are less common on these teeththan Mx 1st molars.

23
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar Proximal ViewTubercles

A

– Can be seen on unworn Mx 2nd molars, but less common than Mx 1st molars.– Are more common on the mesial marginal ridges.

24
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar RootsMorphology

A

– Similar morphology to the Mx 1st molar roots.– 3 roots present MB, DB, and P.

25
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar RootsRoot trunk

A

– The root trunk on the Mx 2nd molars is larger than the 1st molars.

26
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar RootsMB and DB roots

A

– These roots tend to be more parallel toeach other and are much less spreadout and more convergent to the apex.– The MB and DB roots are much closertogether with Mx 2nd molars than withMx 1st molars and are less divergenttowards the apex.

27
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar RootsPalatal Root

A

– Relatively straight, conical and lackingin major curvature.– Extends beyond the external line of thecrown to the palatal.

28
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar RootsRoot curvature

A

– There tends to be more of a distal bendto the roots of the Mx 2nd molar thanthe Mx 1st molar

29
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar Occlusal ViewNumber of Cusps and Cusp Shape

A

– 3-4 cusps present:• MB, DB, ML, and DL cusps.• In some Mx 2nd molars the DL cusp is notpresent.– 4 cusp variants are rhomboid in shape.– 3 cusp variants are heart shaped.

30
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar Occlusal ViewCrown Dimensions

A

– Mx 2nd molars are broader facio-linguallythan mesio-distally.– The difference between these dimensions ismuch more pronounced in the Mx 2nd molarthan the Mx 1st molar.

31
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar Occlusal ViewML Cusp

A

– Largest of all the cusps.– Like with the Mx 1st premolar, the ML cusp isbound mesially by the mesial marginal ridgeand distally by the oblique ridge.

32
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar Occlusal ViewBuccal Cusps

A

MB cusp of the Mx 2nd molars are noticeablylarger than the DB cusps (different than Mx 1st)

33
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar Occlusal ViewDL Cusp

A

– May not be present.– If these cusps are present, they are muchsmaller than any of the other coronal cusps.

34
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar Occlusal ViewOblique Ridge

A

– Present in Mx 2nd molar 4 cusp variants.– It is less prominent in Mx 2nd molar 4 cusp variantsthan in the Mx 1st molars.

35
Q

Maxillary 2nd Molar Occlusal ViewFossae and Grooves

A

– Mx 2nd molar 4 cusp variants share the same fossa and groove arrangement as the Mx 1st molars.– Mx 2nd molars 3 cusp variants have a mesial and distal pit and central groove only.• No disto-lingual groove and distal pit is present.
