Density-dependence and Independence Flashcards
Distinguish between, and interconvert, the finite rate of increase, per capita rate of increase, and net reproductive rate of a population
Compare deterministic and stochastic models in terms of how parameters are calculated and what predictions about population growth they made
Deterministic: population growth parameters (r, R or λ) are fixed but birth, death and reproductive rates vary over time due to random events (e.g., changing weather conditions)
- Deterministic models are oversimplifications
Stochastic models: growth parameters have a probability distribution rather than a fixed value
Describe the conditions under which logistic population growth is likely to occur, with reference to per capita birth and death rates
