Density Flashcards
What is a beam?
A horizontal structural member spanning between Stanchions, walls, columns etc in a building structure. They are required to be of adequate strength to resist applied loading.
Define Density?
Density is the mass per unit volume of a substance\material. Density is expressed in g/cm³ or kg/m³ with mass divided by volume.
What is the formula for calculating density?
Density = mass/volume
What is meant by Relative Density?
The density of a material compared to the density of water. We use this number (without a unit) to check purity and if free from other substances.
What is Capillary action?
Is water that gets drawn through smaller openings.
What is formula for Relative Density?
Relative Density = Density of material / Density of Water
Define Structure of Materials
It is how particles are arranged in that material. Some materials particles are packed closely together ie steel while other have
Name 5 types of materials for DPC?
PVC, Malthoid, Bitumen impregnated felt, Slate, Dense pressed bricks
What is meant by porosity?
When materials mass is not solid throughout. Porosity is the amount of pores or voids (air spaces) present in a material. A material that is porous has many pores and absorbs water.
