Density Flashcards
Mass
Measure of the amount of matter of an object
Volume
Amount of space an object takes up
Density
Amount of mass in a given volume of matter
What is the arrangement of particles in a solid?
Very close ; in set patterns
What is the arrangement of particles in liquids
Spread out ; no set pattern
What is the arrangement of particles in Gases
Very wide spread out; no pattern
Why are some materials more dense than others?
The mass of the individual particles. The larger the mass of the particles that make up that substance, the more dense the substance is.
Which materials float on liquids and why?
Any material that is less dense than a liquid material will float on it. If it is more dense than it will float on it.
E.g. oil floating on water
• a small amount of oil can spread over a large area of water, making it a very bad pollutant.
*you should never oil down a storm water drain - these drains lead to rivers
