Density Flashcards
Equation, unit and symbol of:
Density
Mass/Volume
kg/m^3
ρ (rho)
What is the density of:
Water
1 g/cm^3
When will an object float in water
When it has a density lower than water (1g/cm^3)
When will an object sink in water
When it has a density higher than water (1g/cm^3)
A student is investigating the density of honey. She pours 20 g of honey into a measuring cylinder and measures the volume to be 14 cm 3 . Then, she pours the honey into a glass of water. The honey and water do not mix.
Will the honey sink or float on the water? + What is the density?
Sink (density =1.4)
How do you calculate the density of an irregularly shaped solid
To find the mass: We measure the mass before putting the object in water
To find the volume: We put this object to a measuring cylinder that already has water in it: We record the change in volume.
To find density: Divide the objects mass by the change in volume.
