Demography and the Family Flashcards
What are the three main things which affect population size?
Birth, Death and migration.
What was Tranter’s explanation for the fall in death rate?
More than 75%of the fall of the death rate between the mid19c and 1970s was due to the fall in deaths from infection. This was due to the discovery of antibiotics and their dispensation through the NHS.
McKeown on the fall of death rate?
Due to improved nutrition, hygiene and general public health rather than advances in medicine. Diseases such as Polio were already on the decline before the introduction of immunisation. Healthier life styles have helped people become less exposed to certain risks. eg Clean air act of 1956.
Evandrou et al on population increase?
Life expectancy at birth for people in the UK was 45 and 49 by 2001 it was 76 and 80. This rise can be attributed to the decline in infant mortality rates which has continually dropped through the 20th century and early 21st century.
