KEY DEMOGRAPHIC TRENDS
- BIRHT RATE - HAS FALLEN SINCE THE BEGINGING OF THE 20TH CENTURY, BIRTH RATE PEAKS AFTER THE TWO WORLD WARS KNOWN AS BABY BOOMERS
- FERTILITY RATE AFELL DRAMATICALLY FORM THE LATE 19TH CENTURY, FAMILIES HAVING FEWER CHILDREN DELAYING CHILDBEARING OR HAVING NO CHILDREN AT ALL
, INCREASE IN 2001 BUT STILL BELLOW HISTORICAL NUMBERS

- MORTALITY RATE/DEATH RATE HAS FALLEN DRAMATICALLY SICNE 1900 FROM IMPROVED PUBLIC HEALTH, IMPROVED NUTITION, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC IMPROVMENTS THAT BROUGHT DWONT HE DEATH RATE
TRANTA, FALL IN THE DEATH RATE IS CAUSED BY ILLIMINATION OF PREVENTABLE DISEASES
KEY DEMOGRAPHIC TRENDS 2
- NET MIGRATION - INCREASED, 2ND HALF OF THE 205H C
- NET MIGRATION - MORE PEOPLE TO ARRIVE THAN TO LEAVE
LIFE EXPECTANCEY - current life expectancy is 79.2 for males and 83.1 for females, been steadily climbing althoughh rate has slowed
in 1901 the life expectancy was around 50
the ageing population
in the Uk and many other western societies currently an ageing population.
low death rates, low birth rates means uk population no longer resembles traditional population pyramid but the baby boomers have become the dependant older adults of today
the dependancy ration is problematic - Donald Hirsch - people will need to retire later and pay more tax
- key impacts of ageing population on families and households
include
- families have to find money for care costs rather than having them funded by the state
- older adults may have to sell their homes for care, meaning next generation will not receive inheritance
3
evaluating the ageing population as a major problem
- increasingly older adults are a prosperous section f soceity
Blakey suggests that the older population are consumers and have the lesser time to spend money
- high net migration can help to solve the increased dependancy ration by bringing in more working adults
- pitcher suggest problems are social policy rather than demography, the issue is poor old people often women, social policy needs to reduce inequality against women Thant the ageing population would be less of a problem
