What are pressure groups?
Pressure groups are an organisations of like-minded people who share a concern about a specific issue. By joining together they increase their chances of influencing the government than of they worked individually.
What’s an insider group
An insider group is a pressure group which work closely with the government and can share their expertise and advice on policy making.
What example is there for insider groups? & what does this show?
British Medical Association (BMA) represents the medical profession and helps the government to form policies related to health care.
What examples are against insider groups? & what does this show?
the BMA advised a longer lockdown during COVID-19 and warned the government to keep it in place for a bit longer, but the government stopped listening eventually.
What is an outsider group?
An outsider group are an organisation who do not have the same access to decision-making, they have to make more extreme gestures to get their point across.
What examples are against outsider groups? & what does this show?
the campaign group ‘People’s Vote’ campaign tried to get the government to have a 2nd referendum on Brexit. The petition they helped organise got over 6m signatures and a march in London was attended by around 700k but were still unsuccessful
What examples are for outsider groups? & what does this show?
partly due to the issues raised by Black Lives Matter UK, many tributes to slave traders, colonialists and racists have now been taken down or will be removed.
What is one tactic pressure groups can use to get attention?
Direct action and civil disobedience
Examples for extreme methods & what does this show?
For example, stunts and protests carried out by groups like Extinction Rebellion and Insulate Britain have included blocking motorways, campaigners glueing themselves to fences and doors, and camping out in places to disrupt traffic etc.
