- first document of British history that protected rights
- restricts power of monarchy over citizens (prerog powers)
- start of restriction of gov power

What was the Habeus Corpus Act?
- established foundation of right to fair trial
- means ‘you have a body’ + protection against unlawful imprisonment
Date of English Bill of Rights?

What was English Bill of Rights?
- intro post revolution of 1688
- further restricted monarchy power
- established requirement for regular parliaments + free elections
- established protection from cruel and unusual punishment
What date was Great Reform Act/Rep of the People Act?
1832
What occured pre-1832? (wealth, ethnicity + class, electors, rotten boroughs, regions, low percent)
Voters were wealthy, white + mc.. number of electors ranged from under 10 (rotten boroughs) to over 12k
- criteria had to fit to vote, yet this ranged from regions
- overall 4% could vote
What was the Great Reform Act?
- extended franchise to 800k, 1/5 male adults + 6% of population
- created seats in HOC to rep cities that began springing up as Industrial Rev gained pace
- disbanded rotten boroughs by redrawing constituency boundaries

What was the Second Reform Act?
- moved to enfranchise urban male wc
- product of significant shift to thinking about citizenship, democracy, rights
- influenced by American Civil War (ending 1865), as Chartist movement placed universal male suffrage, secret ballot + other social reforms at top of political agenda.. ACW symbolized enfranchisement + progressive dem ideals, emboldening liberal campaigners
What date was the Third Reform Act?

What was Third Reform Act? (working men, £10, rent, 5.5, 40)
- extended vote to all working men
- act entitled all men holding land valued at more than £10/paying annual rent of £10 to vote
- increased vote to 5.5 mill, but 40% of men unable to vote + left women disenfranchised
What date was Rep of People Act for women?
1918
What did Rep of People 1918 do? (30, 21, property qualifications)
- extended enfranchisement for women to vote in Uk-wide elections
- enfranchised women over age of 30 (subject to property qualifications), as well as men over 21
