democracy and state and sovereignty Flashcards
Sovereignty
to have supreme power or authority.
strengths of democracy (5)
Everyone’s vote is equal.
Elections allow voters to change who is in power if they are not happy.
Power usually changes fairly and peacefully.
The majority of people support the government.
There are free and open debates including discussions on opposing views
weaknesses of democracy (6)
The majority wins. Policies might therefore discriminate against minorities’ views.
Decision making takes a long time as everyone’s views must be heard.
Governments do not always fulfil the promises they make during elections.
Parties might not work together effectively if there is no clear majority. This creates a weak government.
Voters must accept all of the policies of the party they vote for.
Voters could make misinformed decisions due to lack of education on certain issues.
