1) Establishes and protects freedom 2) Protects minorities 3) Democracy controls government power 4) Democracy encourages popular participation
4 key features of representative democracy
1) Citizens select representatives to take decisions on their behalf 2) All adult citizens have the right to vote for representatives 3) Citizens delegate their authority to the representatives 4) Elections are free and fair
Representative democracy
A form of democracy in which the citizens rule through representatives they elect in periodic elections.
Direct democracy
Direct democracy is a form of democracy in which people decide on policy initiatives directly through referendums.
Reasons for a participation crisis
- Alienation with system
- parties too similar
- Scepticism
- Uninformed/uneducated - not pushed
- Prefer to join a PG
- Apathy = general lack of interest or awareness
- Hapathy = General contentment (2001/2005 elections)
Turnout statistics
1945 – 1997 average of 76%, slowly declining since then though modest recovery over the last 2 general elections (2001 = 59%, 2005 = 61%, 2015 = 66%, 2017 = 69%).
