What is Legislative power
power to establish, authorise and abolish laws
What is Executive power
power of persuasion and implementation; monopoly of violence the government is able to enact through fines, legal system, police etc. - only the government has the power to be violent
What is Judicial power
the power to apply law to specific cases, the authority to decide whether someone is guilty or liable and the punishment that is applied if found responsible
What is the Separation of Powers
between legislative, executive and judicial powers; also in Australia for example, between lower house and upper house
What are the Checks and balances
the authorities are held responsible for misuse or abuse of power
