Dementia Disorders Tutorial Flashcards
What is MoCA?
Montreal Cognitive Assessment
What does the MoCA involve?
Series of questions testing?
Series of questions testing: Visuospatial / executive function Naming Memory Attention Language Abstraction Delayed Recall Orientation
What is ACE?
Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination
What does the ACE involve?
Series of questions testing?
Series of questions testing: Attention Memory Fluency Language Visuospatial Abilities
What is good about the ACE?
Can help split up which part of the brain is affected:
e.g. Memory, esp. inability to encode new memories (e.g. remembering the address) is a hippocampal function = Alzheimer’s
Why must this assessment, ACE, be tested over time?
Dementia = progressive
Need to look at progression of cognition overtime to hone in diagnosis
Why is ACE not a perfect test?
Some questions may be on knowledge or intelligence
e.g. Who is the current prime minister?
Person may be socially isolated, not care about politics, etc.
What may be a later presentation in Alzheimer’s (after amnestic issue)?
Visuo-spatial often follows after amnestic issues
What issues may a patient with fronto-temporal dementia?
Change as a person - personality = in frontotemporal lobe
Loss of executive function
What is the large, ongoing issue in dementia care currently?
Remote consultations - someone with dementia struggling with cognition = harder for them to take the test
Patients become even more isolated
