Dementia Flashcards
Dementia
a disorder characterized by a decline from the previous level of function in 1 or more cognitive domains: complex attention, executive function, language, learning and memory, perceptual-motor, and social cognition.
Irreversible Neurodegenerative conditions that causes dementia
Lewy bodies (DLB), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and Parkinson disease with dementia (PDD).
Vascular or multi-infarct dementia
is a loss of cognitive function caused by vascular disease
caused by a single infarct (stroke) or multiple strokes
Subcortical dementia
the most common type of VaD. It occurs when small vessels deep in the brain develop thick walls and become stiff. This reduces blood flow, which damages the nerve fibers that carry signals to white matter. This process can cause infarcts near the base of the brain.6
Mixed dementia
occurs when 2 or more types of dementia are present at the same time. It is characterized by the hallmark abnormalities of AD and another type of dementia.
Diagnostic Studies
Comprehensive medical, neurologic, and psychologic histories help in determining the presence and cause of dementia.
▪Physical examination and neuroimaging techniques (CT or MRI) may be performed to rule out some causes of dementia.
▪Dementia is often diagnosed when two or more brain functions, such as memory loss or language skills, are significantly impaired.
