Define “Assignment”
the work each person is to accomplish in a designated work period. It is also the transference of BOTH responsibility and accountability
Define “delegation”
the transfer of responsibility for a task when it is NOT part of the scope of practice of the care provider. The provider must be accountable and competent in performing the delegated task.
Define “Scope of Practice”
activities nurses are educated and authorized to perform, as established through legislated definitions of nursing practice and complemented by standards, guidelines, and policies
Define “collaborative Practice”
establishing and maintaining effective working partnerships with other professionals, patients, families, and other teams to achieve common goals
What is the difference between delegating and assigning?
Assigning is like a patient assignment in the morning, it refers to the work I am responsible and accountable to accomplish in a designated shift.
Delegating means to give me a task that is outside of my scope of practice that I am competent to complete.
What is different between the scope of practice of an LPN and and RN?
LPN is responsible for caring for STABLE patients who have PREDICTABLE outcomes, whereas the RN is responsible for unstable or acute patients who’s condition is unpredictable
What are the 4 steps of Delegation?
- Assess and Plan for the 5 rights
- Communicate with clear, concise direction
- Ensure surveillance and supervision
- Evaluate and give feedback for the patients response
What are some obstacles related to successful delegation?
- Under-delegation, when nurses don’t trust others or have a need for control
- Over-delegation, when nurses are just lazy
- Improper delegation at the wrong time, to the wrong person for the wrong reason
- Resistance, when nurses are just stuck in their ways
- Unclear communication, interpret the tasks differently
