To delegate:

  1. Describe task using “I statements”
  2. State if delegatee needs to provide written and verbal report after the task is completed.
  3. If written report is needed, inform delegatee where to put the report.
  4. Identify what changes or incidents need to be brought to awareness.
  5. Tell delegatee how and how often tasks will be evaluated.
  6. Describe expected outcomes and timeline for completion of task.
  7. Identity variables that would change authority or responsibility.
  8. Obtain feedback from delegatee to make sure he or she understands task to be performed, ask for questions.
  9. Delegator must remain accessible during performance of task.
