RCN principles of delegation
Must always be in the best interest of patients
The worker must be suitably trained to perform the task
Full records of training given including dates
Evidence of workers competence has been assessed should be recorded
Should be clear guidelines and protocols so that professional is not required to make stand alone judgements
Should be within the workers job description
Team need to be informed of the delegated activity
Ensure supports available
Risks must be assessed and identified
RCN and delegation
Employers accept vicarious liability for their employees meaning if their employees are working within their sphere of competence and in connection with their employment they are also accountable for their actions
Delegation process
Identify- the skills and knowledge needed for the task
Determination-decide in the delegate and whether they have sufficent training and competence
Agreement- it is essences both parties establish where accountability lies
Accountability of HCA
Contractual- to the employer
Legal- to the courts
Supervisory- to the supervising practitioner
Accountability if the student
Contractual- to the university
Legal- to the courts
Supervisory - to their mentor
