dehydration of cyclohexanol Flashcards
what does a dehydration reaction indicate
a loss of water
what is an azeotrope (azeotropic mixture)
two compounds that have different boiling points, but have a different boiling point alltogether when they are mixed
how are azeotropic properties used in distillation
the solvent added will create two ezeotropic mixtures with the two compound present in the original sample. Each of the new azeotropes will boil at different temperatures.
describe the bromine test
bromine reagent will react with alkenes and alkynes if they are present. if this occurs, the brown color will quickly dissipate (positive test)
what could produce a false positive bromine test
the bromine reagent could either react with compounds other than the desired compound. the alkene could also be unreactive (orange brown coloring persists)
describe the permangenate test (Baeyer’s Test)
- potassium permanganate reagent is purple in color
- if alkenes or alkynes react with the reagent, the color will dissipate and a brown precipitate will form
- if negative purple color persists
is the permanganate test or the bromine test more accurate? why?
the permanganate test is more accurate
potassium permanganate reacts with alkenes that are not reactive with bromine making it more accurate
what is most likely to cause a false positive Baeyer’s Test
potassium permangenate reagent reacts with easily oxidizable functional groups
