Q

what is shifting cultivation? Who uses it? why is it sustainable?

A
  • slash and burn trees and vegetation (this gives nutrients to the soil) and then they grow and harvest crops. when the soil starts to lose its goodness they move on to another part of the rainforest to leave that land recover.
  • the kayopo tribe
  • it is not completely destroying rainforest and leaves land to grow

Q

ways to make deforestation sustainable and their categories

A
  • afforestation (replanting trees as they are cut down - use ecosia example)
  • nature reserves (limited and controlled deforestation)
  • heli-logging (using helicopters to only remove the trees that we need rather than damaging the surrounding trees)

categories =

  • afforestation = global
  • nature reserves = national
  • heli-logging - national

Q

why are these solutions sustainable?

A

afforestation = we can continue doing this for a long time and keep the number of trees balanced and hopefully increase their numbers

nature reserves = not as sustainable because deforestation is still occurring but just not as quickly, however it does give us time to figure out long term solutions.

heli-logging = sort of same as nature reserves
