Deforestation Flashcards
At one time, the Earth’s land surface was covered with forests. What caused this to change?
Deforestation.
What is deforestation?
The permanent removal of trees and undergrowth.
What is the leading worldwide cause for deforestation of natural forests?
Agriculture.
What reasons are there for deforestation of natural forests?
- Agriculture;
- Firewood;
- Land space (houses and factories);
- paper and pulp;
- atmospheric pollution (acid rain);
- construction industry.
What effect does deforestation have on biodiversity?
It decreases biodiversity in tropical rainforests.
Which biome is believed to hold around half of all species in the world?
Tropical rainforests.
What effect does deforestation have on global carbon dioxide levels?
Increases CO2 as less photosynthesis occurs.
What is the soil like in deciduous forests?
Very mineral rich, 10-50% organic material.
What important roles do forests play?
They play a major role in global biodiversity, nutrient cycles and influence climates.
What is agroforestry?
The inter-planting of trees and crops.
What is ecotourism?
Attracting visitors to natural ecosystems (usually forests) to raise awareness for the need for conservation.
Suggest two strategies for sustainable development in tropical rainforests:
- Agroforestry.
- Ecotourism.
What has happened to cause desertification?
Climate change.
