Defining abnormality in terms of statistics

Not normally seen or not thought as the norm

IQ 2% have a score below 70 which is seen as Abnormal
What is deviation from social norms
behaviour that is considered different, unusual, or unacceptable by society.
Example of deviation from social norms?
Antisocial personality disorder (psychopath) failure to conform to lawful and culturally normative ethical behaviour(they deviate from social norms or standards
What is FTFA?
Failure to function adequately is when a person cannot deal with the demands of everyday life
Who purposed 3 signs of failure to cope and what are they?
Rosenhan & seligman
•no longer conform to interpersonal rules e.g. maintains personal space
•they experience severe personal distress
•they behave in a way that is irrational or Dangerous
What is deviation from ideal mental health?
Anyone who deviates from psychologically healthy (normal)
Jahoda listed 8 criteria what are they?

What’s one issue with deviation from ideal mental health and FTFA?
They overlap e.g. failure to cope with pressures of work is DFIM and FTFA
