An atom that has lost or gained electrons.

A cation is when an atom has lost electrons, so it had more protons then electrons and so it has a positive charge.

An atom that has gained electrons so it has more electrons then protons, so the ion is negative.

Unstable atoms are known as radiosotype they undergo nuclear decay making them radioactive
