definitons Flashcards
Anadromous
(of a fish such as the salmon) migrating up rivers from the sea to spawn. Opposite of catadromous
Catadromous
(of a fish such as the eel) migrating down rivers to the sea to spawn. The opposite of anadromous
Ecotone
Ecotones are abrupt changes in vegetation or two adjacent, different and homogenous community types, producing a narrow ecological zone between them
Recruitment
survival of offspring to a defined stage:
•the exploited stock (fisheries)
• the adult populations (fisheries, ecology)
settlement
point at which organism takes up benthic/demersal existence
Commensalism
association between two organisms in which one benefits and the other derives neither benefit nor harm
mutualism
interaction between individuals of different species that results in positive effects on per capita reproduction and/or survival of the interacting populations
facilitation
interaction in which the presence of one species alters the environment in a way that enhances growth, survival or reproduction of a second, neighbouring species
Invasibility
alien species, or species that are not native, invade habitats and alter ecosystems around the world.
succession
The non-seasonal, directional and continuous pattern of colonisation & extinction of species populations
Primary succession
succession in an area where no organisms are present
Secondary succession
succession in an area where a biological community is partially intact
Degradative succession
succession on or in dead or dying organic matter
Principle of allocation
States that each individual organism has a finite (limited) quantity of resources that it can use for all necessary life processes
