Spanish American War (1898)
[American perspective]
After learning of the Cuban struggles for independence, and later the rumor-filled sinking of the USS Maine, interventionists persuaded Congress to initiate a war with Spain on the outcome that [if] Spanish forces continue to occupy Cuba and the Philippines. Spain had little preparations and couldn’t find military support from other European countries, which led to certain defeat by the US troops when they inevitably refused to retreat from the forementioned land.

Spanish American War (1898)
“The Spanish-American War of 1898 ended Spain’s colonial empire in the West… and secured the position of the United States as a [World] power. U.S. victory in the war produced a peace treaty that compelled the Spanish to relinquish claims on Cuba, and to cede [retreat but in a removal way] sovereignty over Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to the United States.”

The definition of:
World War I (1917-1918 for US)
Starting in 1914, World War I or “The Great War” was a series of battles mainly over the ownership of disputed Austria-Hungarian land and later for the sanctity of countries already within the war.
The Exam Part:
The central powers: Germany, Ottoman Turkey, Austria-Hungary, and Bulgaria, were fighting against the entente [informally allied] powers: the USA, Great Britain, France, Russia, Serbia, +15 more.
ㅤ ㅤIn 1917, the US, joined the effort with the entente powers as a result of the German navy sabotaging the RMS Lusitania, and after the decoding of The Zimmerman Telegram, which secretly was an anti-American conspiracy between Germany and Mexico. The US sent troops to Great Britain to help them defeat the central powers, and were successful in 1918.
ㅤ ㅤㅤ Then in 1919, Woodrow Wilson, pres. of the US, would sign the Treaty of Versailles, of which ensured that the former, leading entente powers were exceedingly wealthy, and plumeted the former central powers, especially Germany, into grave poverty.
