ABS
Admit before surgery: patients who need to be admitted 1 or more days prior to surgery
Admission Orders
Written instructions by the doctor for the care and treatment of the patient upon entry into the hospital
Aerosol Therapy
administration of a bronchodilator in the form of a mist
Blood Transfusion Consent
a patient’s written permission to receive or refuse blood or blood products
Dialysis
the removal of wastes in the blood usually excreted by the kidneys
Direct Admission
a patient who was not scheduled to be admitted and is admitted from the doctor’s office, clinic, or emergency room.
Elective Surgery
surgery that is not emergency or mandatory and can be planned at a time of convenience
Emergent Procedure/ Add On
an urgent or emergency surgical procedure not preplanned, ie. accident/sudden medical condition
Extubation
removal of a tube (as in an endotracheal tube)
Intubation
insertion and placement of a tube (within the trachea)
Invasive Procedure
a procedure in which the body cavity is entered by use of a tube, needle, device, or even ionizing radiation.
Nebulizer
a machine that sprays medicine into the mouth in a very fine mist
OR slate
schedule of surgeries usually received by the unit the day before the surgery
Oximetry
oxygen saturation of arterial blood (O2 Sats)
PAC
Pre Admission Clinic: department where patients are schedule to see the pre-admission nurse, have all necessary lab, x-ray pre-op tests done etc. and see the Anesthetist if required prior to their surgical admission date.
Patient Controlled Analgesia
PCA allows the patient to self administer small doses of narcotics intravenously. A special IV pump is used.
Post Operative orders
orders written immediately after surgery
Postoperative orders cancel preoperative orders
Pre Admit
The process of obtaining information and partially preparing admitting forms prior to the patient’s arrival at the health care facility
Pre Operative Orders
Orders written by the doctor before surgery to prepare the patient for the surgical procedure.
Prone Position
