A crew member who is authorized to ride the flight deck or CCM J/S.
Additional Crew Member (ACM)
Towards the tail section of the A/C.
At the Back (AFT)
When the A/C is free from ground contact and supporting itself in the air.
Airborne
The speed in which the A/C moves through the air.
Airspeed
The process of positioning a slide in emergency use. This is done when the A/C is read to push from the gate until the A/C reaches the gate at its destination.
Arm
The time at which the flight arrives at a particular station.
Arrival
The time at which the flight departs from a particular station.
Departure
The process by which a CCM selects their monthly work schedule flights - based on seniority.
Bidding
Actual time between the brake release at the departure station to break set at the arrival station.
Block-to-Block
- Seat that can not be used due to A/C balancing purposes.
2. Seats not sold due to existing weight restrictions. (“Load seats”)
Blocked Seats
A divider in the cabin of the A/C.
Bulkhead
A non-flight crew member designated to perform safety duties in the passenger cabin in accordance with requirements f the operator and the Authority; qualified to perform cabin functions in emergency situations and enact procedures to ensure a safe and orderly evacuation of passenger when necessary.
Cabin Crew
A member of either the Flight Crew or the Cabin Crew. When plural (ie. Crew Members), this is referring to the flight and cabin crew collectively.
Crew Member
A flight that could not operate due to weather, mechanical and/or unforeseen circumstances.
Cancelled Flight
Measured in feet, this is the vertical distance from a point on the ground to the lowest layer of clouds.
Ceiling
Any A/C and crew hired by a group (company or person) for its own use.
Chartered Flight
Company mail/materials transported from one port to another.
COMAT
Department responsible for the scheduling of Flight Deck and CCM.
Crew Scheduling
Personnel that work at the ticket counter and assist passengers at the gate.
Customer Service Agent
Any company flight personnel traveling in the line of duty as a passenger, positioning for a flight or return to base.
Deadheading
A flight operating behind schedule.
Delayed Flight
Term used to denote PAX leaving the A/C.
Deplane
A term used to process when an emergency slide is extended.
Deploy
The process of repositioning the slide to its original state - when the A/C has come to a complete stop at the gate.
Disarm
When weather limitation or other condition at a station prevent the A/C from landing, it has to proceed to another station.
Diverted
The city where the CCMs are based.
Domicile
PAX seat row that leads to an Emergency Exit
Emergency Exit Row
Turbine power plant located under each wing.
Engines
Term used for PAX boarding the A/C
Enplane
The quickest and safest means of deplaning PAX and crew from the A/C during an emergency situation.
Evacuation
An additional sector added to a regular scheduled flight.
Extra Section
The transfer of the A/C from one point to another without PAX.
Ferry Flight
The movement of the A/C from its point of origin to the final destination.
Flight
The front section of the A/C.
Forward
Main body of the A/C.
Fuselage
Area containing supplies used for the in-flight service, usually has a service/work area.
Galley
Area where checked-in PAX await their flight before boarding the A/C.
Gate
The total weight of the A/C with CGO, PAX and fuel.
Gross Weight
A portable unit that is attached to the A/C while on the ground. It is used for heat and ventilation purpose and mounted to a truck.
Ground Air-Conditioning
An A/C that is unable to take off due to weather conditions, mechanical issues or other problems.
Grounded
A portable unit attached to the plane while on the ground, which provides power to the A/C when the engine and ACU are not running.
Ground Power Unit
The speed of the aircraft in relation to the ground. This is usually the true airspeed +/- wind velocity.
Ground Speed
The period in which the A/C and/or the crew spends on the ground between flights.
Ground Time
A building where the A/C is serviced/repaired or stored.
Hanger
Wind blowing towards the A/C.
Headwind
An A/C waiting to land.
Holding
An A/C coming into a station.
Inbound
Any city which the flight stops between its origin and final destination.
Intermediate Stop
A narrow band of high-energy wind, usually found between the alt. of 20K-40K feet. These winds typically blow from west to east and can reach 200MPH.
Jet Stream
Enclosed tunnel-like passage way between the A/C and the terminal/gate area. Power driven and controlled by an agent.
Jet Way
A person authorized to sit in the flight deck J/S or the spare CCM J/S.
Jumpseat Rider
Scheduled rest time in a city other than the home basae.
Layover
The flight segment from block to block.
Leg
The technical log book and the cabin log book. These record mechanical and airworthiness. This must be reviewed by maintenance and all needed repairs completed.
Log Book
- A booked PAX that did not check-in for the flight.
2. A flight attendant that just lost his/her job.
No-Show
Airline Employee/Dependants travelling at a reduced ticket rate, but receiving the same service as a revenue passenger.
Non-Revenue
Direct route with no stops.
Non-Stop Flight
A monthly publication of all the airline schedules, fares etc.
Official Airline Guide (OAG)
A flight leaving a station.
Outbound
An enclosed area above the PAX head where luggage is stowed.
Overhead Bin
A person utilizing the A/C travelling services.
Passenger (PAX)
Pilot assigned to each flight that is responsible for the safety and operation of that specific flight.
Pilot-in-Command
Emergency equipment, security and supply check completed by the CCM once aboard the A/C.
Pre-Checked Flight
The paved landing areas on the field side of the terminal building where the A/C is parked to enplane and deplane PAX.
Ramp
Loads/Offloads the A/C of all of its CGO/baggage and completes some aircraft servicing.
Ramps Agent
A crew member on standby in which they could be called into duty. (On-Call Status)
Reserve
Paved strip used for takeoff and landing of the A/C.
Runway
Lead CCM
Senior Cabin Crew Member (SCCM)
Any flight operating in accordance with the published schedule.
Scheduled Flight
Holding procedure when the A/C is waiting its turn to land at an airport.
Stacking
A PAX who has not confirmed reservation but hopes to acquire a seat on the flight.
Standby
To place hand carriage luggage/articles in an assigned area for takeoff and landing.
Stow
Wind behind the A/C that increases the ground speed.
Tailwind
The movement of the A/C to and from the runway for takeoff and landing.
Taxi
The station where the A/C makes its final stop.
Termination
A PAX who is continuing on through an intermediate stop to a further destination.
Through Passenger
The scheduled pairing of two or more flight sectors that returns a CCM to home base the same day that it departs.
Turn Around
Irregular movement of the atmospheric air current.
Turbulence
Horizontal visible from a point to the horizon, measured in miles or fraction of.
Visibility
Blocks placed in front and behind the A/C wheel to prevent it from rolling when parked on the ramp.
