DEFINITIONS (SENTENCE STARTERS) Flashcards
DEFINITION - CONSCIOUSNESS
Consciousness is a psychological construct and it is the awareness of internal and external environments. we cannot directly measure what state of consciousness a person is experiencing.
DEFINITION - NWC
Normal Waking Consciousness is the state of conscious a person experiences when they are awake. In NWC, A person is aware of their thoughts, feelings, memories, sensations and experiences from internal events and the surrounding environment.
DEFINITION - ASC
Altered State of consciousness is any state of consciousness that is distinctly different from NWC. This state of consciousness can occur naturally (Beyond a person’s control) or can be induced (Intentionally produced).
DEFINITION - LEVEL OF AWARENESS
Awareness refers to the level of attention or concentration being used to complete a certain task. In addition, it refers to how conscious or aware a person is of internal and/or external events.
DEFINITION - CONTENT LIMITATIONS
In NWC, it is the ability to control what a person thinks in order to make logical, realistic thought patterns. During NWC, thoughts are more restricted and we are able to process many different pieces of information at the same time. In an ASC, thoughts are less restricted and a person is unable to block unacceptable or undesirable thoughts from entering their consciousness. The amount of information processed is also limited.
