Definitions P1 Flashcards
What is POTENTIAL DIFFERENCE? (V)
The energy transferred per unit charge across the ends of a conductor.
What is CURRENT? (I)
The rate of flow of electric charge. (A-Amperes)
What is RESISTANCE? (R)
The opposition to current flow measured in ohms (Ω)
What is a POTENTIAL DIVIDER CIRCUIT?
When the resistors in series are not the same.
What does EMF stand for?
Electro motor force.
What does EMF mean?
- maximum amount of power per coulomb charge provided by batteries
or - potential difference across a battery when there is no current flow in the circuit
What is TERMINAL POTENTIAL?
Potential difference across a battery when there is a current flow.
What is WORK DONE?
The energy transferred.
What is KINETIC ENERGY?
The energy of motion.
What is GRAVITATIONAL POTENTIAL ENERGY?
Energy as a result of position above earths surface.
What is THE LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MECHANICAL ENERGY?
In an isolated system (no external force), the total mechanical energy remains constant
What is a PULSE?
A single disturbance that is propagated by a medium.
What is AMPLITUDE?
Maximum displacement from rest position. (A)
What is a TRANSVERSE PULSE?
The distance is perpendicular ti the direction of motion.
What is a LONGITUDINAL PULSE?
The disturbance is parallel to the direction of motion.
What is a INTERFERENCE?
When two pulses in the same medium meet and interact with each other.
What is a CONSTRUCTIVE INTERFERENCE?
Two pulses in phase.
What is a DESTRUCTIVE INTERFERENCE?
Two pulses out of phase.
What are WAVES?
A repetition of pulses.
What is WAVELENGTH?
The distance between two consecutive points that are in phase.
What is FREQUENCY?
The number of waves or complete oscillations per second.
Define FREE FALL
The movement of an object when the only force is gravity.
What is VELOCITY?
The rate of change in displacement.
What is ACCELERATION?
The rate of change in velocity.
What is DISPLACEMENT?
The change in the position of an object represented by a line drawn from its starting to its ending point.
What is SPEED?
the displacement of an object divided by the time the journey took.
What is OHMS LAW?
The potential difference across a conductor is directly proportional to the current through it, at a constant temperature.
What is POWER?
The rate at which work is done or energy is transferred.
What is **QUANTISATION OF CHARGE **?
All charges in the universe consist of an integer multiple of the charge of one electron.
What is FREQUENCY?
the number of waves or complete oscillations per second.
What is SPEED
the displacement of an object divided by the time the journey took
