Family
These are individuals related to each other via blood/marriage or legally
Household
Is an inhabited residence, it could be a person living alone or people living communally
Kin
This refers to an individuals relatives
Monogamy
The practice of having a single sexual partner during a period of time
Serial monogamy
Having a succession it relationships with a single sexual partner eg marriage divorce then remarriage
Nuclear family
A family consisting only of heterosexual parents and their offspring
Extended family
A family group that consists of parents, children and other close relatives all living together or in close proximity.
Beanpole family
A multi-generational family with more than two generations still alive reflecting increased life expectancy. It has few members in each generation and when you draw it out the family tree is long and thin.
Polygamy
Practice of having more than one spouse at a time
Polygyny
The condition of having more than one wife at one time
Polyandry
Practice of having more than one husband at a time
Blended family
Union of two adults who have had previous marital relationships and have had children in those relationships
Cohabitation
People live together in an emotional and or intimate relationship. Usually applied to couples who are not married
Live apart together
Individuals who maintain a relationship but choose to live apart
Modified extended family
This is where the extended family lives apart from each other but ties are still important and still relied upon.
