Define ‘household’.
A single individual or members of a family/group who are living at the same address meals and/or living accommodation.
Define ‘nuclear family’.
A two generation family consisting of two heterosexual parents who are married and have one or more children.
Define ‘cohabitation’.
Two adults who share a sexual relationship and a home but aren’t legally married. They may or may not have children.
Define ‘empty nest family’.
Nuclear families where the children have grown up and left.
Define ‘lone parent families’.
Where only one parent is living at home, taking the main responsibility for parenting.
Define ‘reconstituted family’.
Where two families join together to become a family by (re)marriage/cohabitation. (step parents & step siblings)
Define ‘same sex family’.
Where two people of the same sex live together, married or cohabiting.
Define ‘extended family’.
A group of people related by blood or adoption that is extended beyond the nuclear family.
There are two types of extended family;
- Bean Pole (vertically extended - grandparents –> parents –> Children –> Grandchildren)
- Horizontally extended (aunties –> uncles –> cousins)
Define ‘polygyny’.
Where a man has more than one wife.
Define ‘polyandry’.
Where a woman has more than one husband.
Define ‘monogany’.
Having more than one sexual partner at any time.
Define ‘serial monogamy’.
Having a series of long-term relationships consecutively over a lifespan. (one after another)
Define ‘polygamy’.
Having more than one partner.
