Definitions, Lung Disease & COPD Flashcards
What is tidal breathing?
Normal breathing where the vol of air entering and leaving body of adult about 500ml
What is dead space?
Inhaled air in airways where no GE can occur, about 150ml
What is total lung capacity?
Vol of air in longs following max inhalation, usually 6 L
What is residual volume?
Air remaining in lungs after full expiration
What are some asthma symptoms?
Wheeze, breathlessness, chest tightness, cough, hyper-responsiveness, airway inflammation

- Mould
How can asthma be treated?
Inhalers (e.g. brochodilator), tablets (e.g. inhaled steroids)
What is COPD?
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease:
conditions including chronic bronchitis, emphysema, CO airway disease, chronic airflow limitation.
Progressive breathlessness, chronic productive cough, limited exercise capacity caused by airway obstruction, not reversible, permanent damage
What is the most important COPD treatment?
Smoking cessation
What are some treatments for stable COPD?
- Bronchodilator inhalers
- Antimuscarinic inhalers
- Steroid inhalers
- Combination inhalers

- Mucolytic medicines
What are some treatments to manage exacerbations?
- Steriod tablets
- Antibiotics
- Hospital admissions
What are some treatments for end-stage COPD?
- Domiciliary O2
- Palliative care inc. physio and rehabilitation, exercise training, support and advice
