Definitions/Identification and Colour Light Signals Flashcards
What is a Stop Signal?
A stop signal is a signal that can show a stop aspect or indication.
What is a Distant Signal (Repeater Signal)?
How can they be identified?
A Distant Signal is a signal which cannot show a stop aspect or indication.
-Some are identified by a white triangle or the letters ‘R’ or ‘RR’ on the signal identification plate.
What is an Automatic Signal?
A signal operated by the passage of trains.
-Some can be placed to danger by Signaller or ground frame.
What is a Controlled Signal?
A signal operated by the signaller.
-Some can be placed to work automatically by Signaller.
What is a Semi-automatic Signal?
A signal normally operated by the passage of trains, but can also be controlled by Signaller or ground frame.
Three-aspect signalling
(Non-LED)
State Sequence
Displays 3 different sequences:
(G) ( ) ( )
( ) (Y) ( )
(. ) ( ) (R)
Four-aspect signalling
(Non-LED)
State Sequence
Displays 4 different sequences: ( ) (Y) ( ) ( ) (G) ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) (Y) (Y) ( ) (. ) ( ) ( ) (R)
-Green Aspect-
(Three and Four Aspect Signals)
What does a Green Aspect mean?
What is the next signal?
Means: Proceed
-Next signal likely to be:
3 aspect = Yellow
4 aspect = Double Yellow
-Double Yellow-
(Four Aspect Signals)
What does a Double Yellow Aspect mean?
What is the next signal?
Means: Preliminary Caution - Proceed
-Next signal is likely to be a single yellow (caution)
-Single Yellow-
(Three and Four Aspect Signals)
What does a Single Yellow Aspect mean?
What is the next signal?
Means: Caution - Proceed with caution
-Next signal is likely to be a Red (danger - stop)
-Red-
(Three and Four Aspect Signals)
What does a Red Aspect mean?
Means: Danger - Stop!
What is a Junction Indicator (feathers)?
Tells the driver he is being signalled either left or right of the straight route.
What is a Route Indicator?
What can it be associated with?
[ 1 ] or [ S ] etc
A Route indicator shows a letter or a number.
It tells the driver which route the movement is being signalled on to.
-May also be associated with a junction indicator.
What does Flashing Yellow Aspect(s) mean?
Facing points at a junction ahead are set for a diverging route and the speed of the train must be reduced.
Flashing Yellow on a Three-Aspect Signal
List the sequence.
1) Green
2) Single Flashing Yellow
3) Single Steady Yellow + Junction Indicator
4) Permissible Speed Restriction + Arrow
5) Junction
6) Red
Flashing Yellow on a Four-Aspect Signal
List the sequence.
1) Green
2) Double Flashing Yellow
3) Single Flashing Yellow
4) Single Steady Yellow + Junction Indicator
5) Permissible Speed Restriction + Arrow
6) Junction
7) Red
What are Position-Light Signals used for?
Position-Light signals are used for shunting purposes.
Position-Light Signals (Red Lights)
List the two Red sequences that indicate stop?
( )
(R)(W) Red and White
( )
(R)(R) Double Red
Position-Light Signals (Yellow Lights)
Which route does this apply to?
The two yellow sequences that indicate stop?
This signal only applies to the direction its associated with.
-Other movements can pass the signal without it being cleared.
( )
(Y)(W) Yellow and White
( )
(Y)(Y) Double Yellow
Position-Light Signals (White Aspects)
What does it mean?
What must the driver be prepared to do?
Show its sequence.
Means: proceed with caution.
Be prepared to stop short of any train, vehicle or obstruction.
(W)
(. )(W) Two White at 45°
Main Aspect Signal
+Associated Position-Light
When the APL is unlit, what does this mean?
What will the Main Aspect and APL show for proceed?
Unlit APL: This means ‘obey the main signal’
Proceed:
Main Aspect = Red
APL = Two White at 45°
Position-Light Signal
+Associated Route Indicator
What does this route indicator display?
What other name is given to this route indicator?
It displays a letter or number e.g. [1] or [S] etc.
It is also called Miniature (stencil) route indicator.
Colour light signals not in use.
How would you know that a Main Aspect or Position-Light is not in use?
They will be covered up.
Main aspects may also have a large ‘X’ over the cover.
