Great chain of being

deserving poor
poor who deserve help e.g. sick/old/orphans
undeserving poor
poor who do not deserve help because they can’t be bothered to work so made themselves poor by their own actions
vagabonds
people who move around - thought to be criminals
House of Correction
a type of punishment built after the passing poor law that meant that unwilling workers were set to work through hard labour (punishment reform)
nobility
class below monarch - very wealthy and owned lots of land
gentry
class below the noble - quite wealthy and were land owners/land lords
Great Rebuilding
a period in which heightened level of construction work, architectural change & rebuilding - improved rural buildings too
poverty
living in conditions where you are unable to afford main necessities e.g. food, clothes, water, housing
beggars license
you needed one of these to beg legally
