Democracy
People get a say in decisions that are made
Representative Democracy
Citizens elect representatives to formulate legislation on their behalf
Liberal Democracy
Free and fair elections, with a belief in key rights and responsibilities
Totalitarian Democracy
Citizens can vote, but only for candidates within the ruling party
Majoritarian Democracy
Government is based on the views of the majority
Consensual Democracy
Conscious effort to include all groups - especially minorities
Parliamentary Democracy
Executive is drawn from, and is accountable for, legislature
Consultative Democracy
A traditional representative democracy that incorporates elements of direct democracy (referendums, initiatives)
Pluralist Democray
Encourages participation, with free and fair elections
Direct Democracy
Everybody can vote in every decision
Referendum
A vote by the electorate on a single (important) issue that is posed to them by the government
Initiative
A vote by the electorate on a single issue that they bring forward to the government
Political Participation
Any activity that shapes, affects, or involves the political sphere
Electoral Participation
Participation by voting in elections and referendums
Non-electoral Participation
Any participation that doesn’t include voting (canvassing, protest, staffing campaign offices)
