Band
- a metal ring, usually found on back tooth, cemented to a tooth for strength and anchorage
Bite
How top and bottom teeth come together
- each tooth should meet its opposite tooth in a way that promotes functions (biting, chewing, and speaking)
- when teeth and jaws are in proper position should create a pleasing appearance
Board-Certified Orthodontist
An orthodontist who has completed an American Board of Orthodontics Specialty Certifications exams
- also known as DIPLOMATE of the “ABOOSC”
- the American board of orthodontics is the only orthodontic specialty certifying board that is recognized by the American Dental Association.
Braces
A word commonly used to describe a fixed orthodontic appliance, comprised of brackets, bands, and wires
Bracket
The small metal, ceramic, or plastic attachment bonded to each tooth with a tooth-colored adhesive.
- the bracket has a slot that the orthodontic wire fits into.
Bridge
Replacement for missing natural tooth/teeth that fills the opening between adjacent teeth.
- most often existing adjacent teeth receive crowns and a false tooth is attached to the crowns
Bruxism
Grinding of the teeth, usually during sleep.
- can cause abnormal tooth wear and may lead to pain on jaw joints, facial and/or neck muscles and difficulty opening and closing of the mouth
Buccal
Term used to describe the cheek side of the back teeth in both jaws
Buccal tube
Small metal part of the brackets welded to the cheek side of the molar band.
- tube holds an archwire, lip bumper, headgear face bow or other type of appliance may used to move the teeth.
