Definitions And Brain Functions Flashcards
Function of the frontal lope
Voluntary movement, expressive language and managing higher level executive functions.
Function of parietal lobe
Sensory processing
Function of temporal lobe
Processing auditory information and with the encoding of memory.
Function of occipital lobe
Object and face recognition, colour and determination.
Sensory interaction
Received through senses
Motor
Movement
Autonomic
Involuntary functions in the body (heart beat, breathing, digestion)
Hemispheres
The two halves of the brain
Cognitive
Mental process (thinking logic, problem solving).
Early brain development 3-4 weeks into pregnancy
Brain begins to develop, the neutral plate folds over to form the neutral tube, the brain forms into 3 parts (front, mind, thalamus). Develops into the specialised parts of the brain, the cerebrum will fold into the left and right halves of the brain.
Early brain development- 6-7 weeks into pregnancy
The brain splits into 2, one eventually forming the cortex and the thalamus of the brain.
15 weeks into pregnancy
Areas become more structured and separated. The cerebrum had separated from the rest of the brain.
6 moths to birth
Fully formed but still developing, stems matured, folds on the cortex begin to form (wrinkle).
Nature
The idea that our characteristics come from genetics.
Nurture
The idea that our behaviour and characteristics come from the environment were in.
Schemas
Mental framework of beliefs about the world that develop due to experiences, e.g when you go to the hospital you think of medicine, sickness and injury.
Assimilation
Adding new info into an existing schema.
Accommodation
Information doesn’t fit into and existing schema so a new one is formed or changed.
Object permanence
(Sensory motor stage, ages 0-2). Understanding that an object still exists even when they cannot be seen.
Egocentric
(Pre-operational 2-7) they cannot see things from another’s point of view.
Conservation
(Concrete operational 7-11) knowing the amount of something stays the same even if the app wrench changes.
Formal operational 11+
By this age children can think logically using abstract ideas.
Readiness
You cannot teach a child to preform tasks until they are biologically ready
Growth mindset
People with a growth mindset belive that ability and intelligence can develop through practice.
Fixed mindset
Someone who believes that ability/ intelligence is innate, fixed in their genes and there’s nothing they can do to change it.
Mindset continuum
People are not only one but a mix between growth and a fixed mindset
Praise
To express of someone else and or what they have done, it increases motivation
Self efficacy
A persons understanding of their own capabilities
Visualisers
Peeper learning things by using pictures rather than words, remeber things by what they look like.
Auditory/ verbalises
Prefers to learn information by hearing it or reading it.
Kinaesthetic
Prefers to learn info by direct experiments and active exploration.
