Definitions Flashcards
Hooke’s Law
The limit of proportionality is the point where the object no longer deforms elastically, and starts to deform inelastically.
Electric field
A region of force around a charged object
Equilibrium
No resultant force
and no resultant turning effect
Specific heat capacity
The amount of energy (in Joules) needed to increase the temperature of 1 kg of a substance by 1 degree Celsius.
Specific latent heat
The amount energy required to change the state of 1kg of a substance
Critical angle
The angle at which total internal reflection would occur if gone beyond.
Total internal reflection
Complete reflection of a ray of light within a medium such as water or glass from the surrounding surfaces back into the medium
Monochromatic light
Single wave frequency of light
Ultrasound
Sound waves with a frequency greater than 20 000 Hz. (Upper range of human hearing)
Nuclear fission
The splitting of a large atomic nucleus into smaller nuclei.
Nuclear fusion
The joining together of two (hydrogen) nuclei to form a helium nucleus
Mass
The resistance that a body of matter offers to a change in its speed or position upon the application of a force
Magnetic field
The region around a magnet where a force acts on another magnet or on a magnetic material.
Unit prefixes (meter)
Giga 10^9
Mega 10^6
Kilo 10^3
Meter (standard for example)
Deci 10^-1
Centi 10^-2
Mili 10^-3
Micro 10^-6
Nano 10^-9
Gravitational field
A region in which a mass experiences a force due to gravitational attraction.
