Definitions Flashcards
Net migration
the difference between the number of immigrants (people coming into an area) and the number of emigrants (people leaving an area) throughout the year
Infant mortality rate
number of deaths of children under one year of age per 1000 live births.
Fertility rate
the number of births per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44.
Birth rate
the number of live births per thousand of population per year.
Death rate
amount of deaths to the population of a particular area or during a particular period of time
Dependency Ratio
age-population ratio of those typically not in the labor force and those typically in the labor force.
(aging population increases the dependence ratio)
Replacement Level
The fertility rate needs to be 2.1 to replace the existing population. If it is lower than 2.1, we will see an ageing population where there are more ‘aged’ than ‘young’ in a society
