Definitions Flashcards
What is static electricity?
Static electricity is an imbalance of an electric charge on an object’s surface.
It results when an electric charge is placed on an object and it stays.
What does the Law of Electric Charges state?
Like charges repel and opposite charges attract
What are the differences between protons, electrons and neutrons?
Protons- positive charge, stationary
Electrons- negative charge, mobile
Neutrons- neutral charge, stationary
What are the three types of charging?
Induction, conduction/contact and friction
For each type of charging, what are the initial charges of the two objects?
Friction- 2 neutral
Induction- neutral and charged (positive or negative)
Conduction- 2 charged objects or 1 charged and 1 non charged object (6 possible combinations)
What is the difference between insulators and conductors?
Conductors are materials that allow electrons to pass through them easily.
Insulators are materials that resist movement.
What is grounding?
Removing the charge from a charged object by connecting it to a larger neutral body (ground).
