Definitions Flashcards
Learn all genetic terms
Gametes
Reproductive cells used in sexual reproduction (Sperm & Egg)
Zygote
A fertilized egg (when the sperm and egg unite)
Homologous Chromosomes
Set of one paternal and one maternal that pair up together in a cell during meiosis
Gene
A specific sequence of DNA which codes for a specific protein (trait)
Allele
Variant form of the same gene, 2 alleles for each protein. Arise by mutations.
Polypeptide
A string of amino acids
Somatic Cell
Body cell
Gonads
Sex organs (testes & ovaries)
Mitosis
Cell division in skin cells
Meiosis
Cell division in gametes
Diploid
2 sets of chromosomes, one from each parent
Independent Assortment
When two homologues of a pair are randomly distributed to the gametes. (8.4 million different distributions possible)
Crossing-over
When parts of each homologous chromosome are exchanged to each other
Random mating
Mating with anyone, no restrictions
Random fertilization
Any one egg uniting with any sperm
Phenotype
Physical characteristic
Genotype
Representation of gene on chromosomes
Dominant allele (trait)
Seen often in an organism
Recessive allele (trait)
Only seen in absence of dominant allele, dominant allele masks the recessive allele
BB
Homozygous Dominant
Bb
Heterozygous Dominant
bb
Homozygous Recessive
