Definitions Flashcards
What are mutually exclusive events?
They cannot happen at the same time, probability of outcomes sum to 1
What are complementary events?
Mutually exclusive events that are the exact negation of each other
What does ‘dependent’ mean?
The occurrence of one event affects the chances of of occurrence of the other
Can independent events occur at the same time?
Yes
Can mutually exclusive events occur at the same time?
No
What is the random variable?
The result of a chance situation
What is a discrete random variable?
- Finite values within a range
- Sample space is defined over a finite number of outcomes
What is a continuous random variable?
- Any value within a range
- Number of values is virtually infinite
- Sample space has virtually infinite number of outcomes
What does the binomial distribution represent?
Random experiment with two mutually exclusive outcomes, success and failure
