Archaeologist
Scientists who study, describe and interpret artifacts.
Brazier
A pan or stand (usually made of metal) for holding lighted coals used for heating or cooking.
City state
Independent city and surrounding area with its own land and government.
Cuneiform
Writing in wedge shaped stroked that are pressed into clay. Usually done with a sharpened rock.
Deity
God, a divine being.
Divine right
The belief that the ruler of a country has been chosen by a god.
Dowry
Property or money brought by a wife to her husband at the time of marriage.
Dynasty
Succession of rulers from a family
Irrigation
System of channels or streams passing through land, often with a sprinkler; used to supply water to farmland.
Epic
Long story of adventures of some historic person.
Kiln
Oven for baking bricks or firing pottery. Important clay tablets were baked this way to preserve them.
Lancet
Small broad knife with two edges and a sharp point.
Pictographs
Pictorial sign or symbol that represents words or groups of words.
Rabies
Contagious virus that affects the central nervous system. Often transmitted through saliva from a bite.
Scribe
A person whose job was to write for someone else.
