Baseline
runs east and west
Government lots
land areas that are not divided in to quarters of a quarter due to location or size. Found along the edges of rivers or lakes.
Lots and block
a system for the legal description of land that refers to parcels lot and block numbers. Assessment maps.
Metes and bounds
a system for the legal description of land that refers to the parcels boundaries, which are formed by the point of beginning and all intermediate points and the courses or angular direction of each point.
Monument
a stone or other fixed object used to establish real estate boundaries.
Point of beginning
metes and bounds begin and end here.
Principal meridian
runs north and south
Range
vertical columns
Range lines
survey lines that extend due north and south at 6-mile intervals and are numbered east and west from the principal meridian. Range lines form the east and west boundaries of town ships.
Rectangular survey system
divides land in to townships and ranges approximately 6-mile square, each normally containing 36 on square miles sections of 640 acres, except when adjusted for the curvature of the earth, called government survey system.

Tier
horizontal row of town ships.
Township
this the area is between 2 township lines and 2 range lines (36 sections of 620 acres)
Township lines
lines that run east and west 6-mile intervals set the north and south boundaries of townships.
