Acrocyanosis
Baby that has blue extremities and pink face/trunk
Meconium
First stool by an infant during or after birth
Should be thick and dark green, lighter color (light green or brownish) has been present longer, higher chance of aspiration
Transient Tachypnea (TTN)
Period of rapid breathing if fluid in lungs not cleared. More common in C-section (no assistance from contractions)
APGAR
Performed at 1 min and 5 min
Appearance (blue/pink&blue/pink)
Pulse (0/<100/>100)
Grimace (none/grimace/cough,cry,sneeze)
Activity (flaccid/arms and legs/well flexed)
Respiratory effort (absent/weak/good)
7+ @ 1 min good, 1-2 increase at 5 good indication of transistion
Epispadias
Urethra opens on the upper aspect of the penile shaft
Hypospadis
Urethral opening on edge of the glans, on the underside of the shaft of penis or at base of the penis
Mongolian spots
darker coloration (resembles bruises) on back or buttocks
Polydactyly
extra digit: may be family trait or genetic syndrome
Milia
Tiny, white bumps on nose, skin, cheeks. Cellular debris in the boors. Should resolve by 1-3 months with washing (should not be removed by hand)
Syndactyle
Webbing between fingers or toes. May be associated with genetic syndrome
Colostrum
Substance produced in breasts that precedes milk, provides immunity to external contagion during first few weeks. High in antibodies and protein

Severe nausea and vomiting (morning sickness)
Episiotomy
Surgical incision into perineum and vagina to prevent traumatic tearing during delivery
Homans sign
Pain in popliteal region or back of calf when checked by abruptly dorsiflexing the foot with leg flexed at knee. Indicative of incipient or deep vein thrombosis
Involution
Phase immediately following delivery. Contractions. Causes uterus to shrink and controls postpartum bleeding
Lochia
Post delivery discharge, made up of tissue and blood from uterus
Preeclampsia
High blood pressure and protein in urine
Erythromycin
Applied to eyes to prevent blindness 2/2 vaginal bacteria causing virus
Prostaglandin
substance found naturally in body that appear to be essential for labor process
Vitamin K
injection shortly after birth, promote clotting and decreased intracranial bleeding
Newborn Vitals
30-60 respiration per minute
85-205 bpm (awake)
80-160 bpm (sleep)
Intrathecal
Within a sheath. Cerebrospinal fluid contained in dura mater. Also, drugs administered into cerebrospinal fluid bathing the spinal cord and brain
oxytocin
peptide from hypothalamus, to posterior lobe of pituitary, induce smooth muscle contraction in uterus and mammary glands
